CANADA, Windsor: Pests and Vermin

23 images Created 6 Jun 2014

"Pests and Vermin" (in progress) is about panhandlers ("pests" and "vermin" as they were called by a certain columnist in the local daily paper), community activists (known as "professional protesters" to the same writer) and the public meeting they intend to present in early July. The initial meeting went very well with these decisions: a July 2 evening meeting at All Saints' Church; a meal; three or four speakers; question and answer period. As well, the group decided to send a delegation to City Hall to voice their opposition to the proposed "care meters". (Gallery updated as required. Might even make a little book too.)

  • Inital meeting of panhandlers and community activists to create a public panhandler meeting. The decisions were for a July 2 meeting at All Saints' Church, for the panhandlers to tell their stories and for a meal. Additionally there is going to be a delegation to City Hall next Monday to discuss the proposed care meters. These meeting and actions are a response a pejorative coumn in the local daily calling panhandlers "pests" and "vermin".

  • Panhandlers' Public meeting held at All Saints' Anglican Church featured guests speakers and panhandlers themselves. A meal was served and there were many questions and answers. Most of all, panhandlers themselves did most of the event organizing. Their next step is to make a presentation to City Council about proposed "care metres".

  • Second meeting of Street Solidarity Committee meeting. Two lawyers from Legal Assistance of Windsor attended. Chaired by Richard Dalkeith. Somehow the committee went from "organic" to IWW lead which is fine but a curious change none the less. Makes sense though as many of the panners are uniion members including Robbee who joined at meeting end.
